GTRI – Georgia Tech Research Institute, Summer Internship for High School Students

This is the 4th year that the GTRI (Georgia Tech Research Institute) Robotics and Intelligent Systems Division is hosting a Robotics Summer Internship. This is a 5-week program (starting sometime in June with exact date TBD) that includes an $1100 stipend at the end of the program for your participation. This year’s project involves dexterous grasping and manipulation for manufacturing with a robotic arm. What is dexterous grasping and manipulation? It is the ability to have a robot arm pick up objects and use them in simple tasks. For example, grasping a round/square peg and placing it in a hole or connecting a USB plug to a socket. We will be using the project board designed by the National Institute for Standards and Technology (NIST) for this project. See https://www.nist.gov/el/intelligent-systems-division-73500/robotic-grasping-and-manipulation-competition-manufacturing for more information on the problem. Don’t worry, we will start small and build up to the final project. It should be an exciting summer that includes technical work and learning as well as campus tours and events. The summer culminates with a final presentation at the Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI) to your family and friends.

Students will work on an integrated High School – Georgia Tech team to accomplish this task. Individual assignments may range from a literature review of current techniques to actual programming of the robotic system utilizing C++ and a Robot Operating System (ROS) infrastructure.

Required Skills

The ability to work in a group and independently is a must. Students should also be able to demonstrate competence in an object-oriented programming language (C++, Java). C++, as well as OpenCV, are a bonus.
